A $1,000 reward has been offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of whoever shot a wild burro with an arrow in Reche Canyon north of Moreno Valley.

The search for the burro was to continue Thursday afternoon by volunteers with the animal-rescue group DonkeyLand, said John Welsh, a spokesman for Riverside County Animal Services. They hope to treat the burro’s wound.

DonkeyLand posted news of the reward on its Facebook page along with a photo of the donkey with an arrow protruding from its head. Tips may be submitted anonymously by emailing dhorn@riversidesheriff.org or calling Animal Services at 951-358-7387.

Animal Services found the burro Wednesday near Black Stallion Ranch and shot it with two tranquilizer darts, but the burro fled and couldn’t be captured. The arrow was no longer stuck in the burro’s head at that point but the wound was visible, Welsh said.

Animal Services turned the search over to DonkeyLand. Animal Services officers were concerned that pursuing the burro could cause it to overheat on a day when temperatures were in the high 90s. DonkeyLand volunteers planned to resume the search when temperatures fell, Welsh said.

Animal Services has not received any tips on who the shooter might be.

“To some, it might not be any big deal, but to this burro, this is his life and he deserves to be safe,” DonkeyLand’s Facebook post reads. “The wild burros are federally protected animals and it is illegal to shoot, kill, feed, poison, herd, rope or kidnap any of the wild burros in Riverside County and San Bernardino County — it is illegal even on private property. There is no excuse for harming or killing a defenseless animal.”

Anyone who sees the burro should keep its distance and call for help. DonkeyLand’s phone number is 951-234-0393.
